…and top five girls

Following on from the previous entry, this one looks at the top five female performers for the Isle of Man in each individual event throughout Island Games history. We have only had three 5000m competitors and one triple jumper to date, which explains the shorter lists for those events.

Incidentally, after I published the men’s list, Tom Riley quite reasonably queried why Gordon Crowe’s 100m time from 1989 was included when it was achieved with the assistance of a following wind of over 5 metres per second. The legal limit is 2 m/s. The answer is that although performances with a following wind of over 2 m/s do not count in official athletics records (so Gordon’s time is not an IOM record) they are recognised by the Island Games Association as Island Games records. I am not sure why this is so, but it has always been the case. Perhaps someone can explain!

Indeed we have the same situation with the women’s list, as three of the five listed for both the 100m and 100m hurdles also achieved their fastest times with a following wind beyond the legal limit. Some of the past Games results do not show wind speeds, which is why in some cases it has not been included. Danaa Callow’s time of 12.08 from 1991 was set running into a 1.60 m/s headwind, and was an Island Games record until Kelly Sotherton pipped it with 12.02 in 1997 with the help of a following wind of 2.7 m/s. Danaa’s time remains by far the fastest wind legal time in Island Games history.

Also worth mentioning is that the Half Marathon course in Aland in 1991 was not correctly measured and was considered to have been a fair way short of the Half Marathon distance. So the performances of Robbie Callister, Brenda Walker and Stephanie Quirk, excellent though they were (and truly outstanding in Brenda’s case), are not recognised anywhere other than on Island Games records.
